Education

Education

The following is the National Green Party’s stance on supporting the Country’s Education System.

In Summary:

The NGP will address Education Reform by providing the following:

1. Emphasis on History & Culture

2. Creation of a Skills & Vocational Institution

3. Introduction of Life Skills into the Curriculum

4. Religious Education

5. Improved Training and Certification for Teachers

6. Expanded Education for Adults

7. Revamp Education System

Detail:

1. Emphasis on History & Culture

The NGP would introduce Creole as a school subject, supported by immersive language programmes to children from an early age. Emphasis will be placed on Black (African) Caribbean and Saint Lucian history in every educational institution in Saint Lucia, and at all levels.

2. Support of a Skills & Vocational Institution

Support for an Institution to provide short (from three months to two years) trades programmmes in vocational skills such as Computer Programming, Agriculture, Culinary Arts, Electrical, Mechanical, Carpentry, etc.

3. Introduction of Life Skills into the Curriculum

At the schools: Coping Skills, Harm Reduction and Prevention Strategies, Personal Health, Personal Development to Problem-Solving, Financial Planning & Budgeting, Critical Thinking, Communication Skills, Decision-Making, Creative Thinking, Interpersonal Relationship Skills, Self-Awareness Building Skills, Gender and Race Equality, and Coping with Stress Skills.

4. Religious Education

What is the meaning of life? How did the world begin? Where do you go after you die? What other cultures and societies believe about human beings' relationship to a higher power (or God). Types of religions across the world. Religion teaches a set of practices to live by, such as being kind to others, telling the truth, or praying. Many religions have different traditions, like attending church or temple, celebrating religious holidays, or wearing specific clothes.

NGP Education Policy

5. Improved Training and Certification for Teachers

Certification must be required for Teachers, and a Training Programme and Support provided for Teachers to be successful in gaining their Certification.

6. Expanded Education for Adults

Make education easily accessible to any adult on the island, to include: Vocational, Personal Health and Life Skills. Specific programmes for Bed & Breakfast owners and Farmers.

7. Revamp Education System

The current Education System requires a serious overhaul, starting with the end of Common Entrance Exams (CEE). It’s time that Saint Lucia’s children can attend school in their own communities. Expand the Curriculum to provide different course levels, better matched to the Student’s ability.
